Recommended Practices for Engineering Expert Witnesses
Speaker: Dr. Gary S. Brierley
Recorded: March 16, 2010
Length: 90 minutes

What does it mean to be an "expert witness" in lawsuits involving the standard of care for civil engineering projects? Dr. Gary S. Brierley, President, Brierley Associates, LLC, discusses some of the areas of focus for serving as an "expert witness."

Topics discussed include the following:

  • Ethical considerations
  • Qualified requirements
  • Work products
  • Objectivity vs. advocacy
  • How to prepare an expert report
  • How to prepare for a deposition

Dr. Brierley has been involved with scores of major claims associated mostly with underground construction, and shares his experiences during the webinar. Primary emphasis of this online seminar is report preparation and participation in depositions--activities separate from "forensic engineering," where major field investigations are necessary in order to discover the cause of a civil engineering failure.

Most civil engineer cases are settled prior to court appearances, based largely on the appropriateness of the legal issues and the quality of the expert's report. The seminar will not include discussion of what it means to testify in court.
